Once a mortal woman renowned for her beauty, Medusa was transformed into a Gorgon, crowned with snakes and said to possess a gaze that could turn onlookers to stone. But far from a figure of fear, Medusa came to symbolise protection and strength — her image used throughout antiquity to guard against harm and evil.
