Through the ‘80s and early-mid ‘90s, Yoshiyuki Konishi’s Ficce and eponymous label occupied a unique niche within Japanese fashion. Spurning the en vogue cynicism of Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo, he produced elaborate, maximal knits that could use up to sixty different colors, (each spool of yarn garment dyed in house, as opposed to purchased already processed). He integrated fabrics such as rope and vinyl tubing into his work, giving a three dimensional element to many of his pieces. Despite his traditional sense for construction, Konishi pulled from a varied set of influences for his visual motifs, including the colorful vision of the future put forth by vintage American cartoons like The Jetsons. Note how distinctly this coat rejects the dystopian visuals pioneered by films like Mad Max and Bladerunner, which were at the time the preeminent visions of the coming century.
