IG: Guerrero_sto Jean paul Gaultier SS94 Handkerchief printed pants Despite not having any formal fashion education, Jean Paul Gaultier managed to establish himself in the 70s and 80s as the “enfant terrible" of French fashion. His work often challenged the boundaries of high-fashion, breaking and reversing gender roles and allowing plus sized women, older men and people of different ethnicities to graze his runways before any other designer. His undeniable talent paired with his rejection of conformity made him a fiercely divisive designer. Despite the negative attention he received (mainly by the French Press) he was supported by many subversive, forward-thinking icons, including Madonna and Marilyn Manson, both whom he conceptualized tour wardrobes for. Jean paul Gaultier’s world is one where ethnicity and gender are comfortably tangled. This vision is apparent in the Spring Summer 1994 “Les Tatouages” collection. Defined as “A startling vision of cross-cultural harmony”, this collection featured a blend of references, including men in skirts, denim cut in eighteenth-century shapes, corsetry, chain link accessories, knight armor, a punkish graffiti print, and a tattoo-currency motif. This collection also featuring elements from tribal, Indian, and African cultures and traditional clothing, such as the much-commented-on faux piercings, which highlighted his interest in “global village chic” that would ultimately define Gaultier’s work for decades. This particular pair of pants feature a number of prints that resemble a handkerchief. The prints are different and it ultimately looks like a number of different handkerchiefs mended together to make the pants. The material is a light cotton, ideal for warmer temperatures.
